- Where is Halberg Ecology Camp held?
Camp Clearfork, a Civilian Conservation Corps campground in the Ouachita National Forest, about 25 minutes west of Hot Springs.
- Who can attend?
Any 5th- or 6th-graders with an interest in nature and who have current immunizations!
- What is the cost?
$350. The actual cost per camper is roughly $460, which the camp subsidizes. Every summer we have plenty of scholarships and tuition assistance available for campers who need financial aid. The tuition assistance application can be found in the camp application form.
- How long is camp?
Camp runs from Sunday afternoon until Friday morning.
- When will I hear back on if my child has been accepted?
The executive director will contact you via email typically within 1-2 business days. If you have not heard back in that amount of time, please check your spam folder, and if you still haven’t found anything, contact the executive director.
- Is camp accepting applications?
Each year we open applications when our dates are confirmed with the National Forest Service, which is usually the first week of March. We begin accepting applications at that point.
- When is camp?
Camp is typically held in the middle two weeks of June. Our dates are usually confirmed by the National Forest Service by the first week of March
- Can my child take their cell phone?
There is limited cell service at camp, and campers are not allowed to keep their cell phones during camp. We have a landline on-site (501-991-3830) that is used for emergencies, and we will call you if your child needs to get in contact with you.
- My camper has medication. Who is in charge of making sure they take it?
At registration, you will meet with our full-time nurse and turn over any necessary medications. Our nurse keeps a full schedule of medications for every camper, and will dispense medications on schedule and as needed.
- What does my camper need to bring?
A full suggested packing list is included in the acceptance packet. Campers must bring closed-toe shoes to wear while at camp. Cabins do not have air conditioning, but we do have box fans for every room; however, you may still like to send along a fan for your camper.
- Can I visit my camper?
We do not allow visitors at camp for our campers’ and staff’s security.
- Can I send food for my camper?
We do not allow campers to keep food in their cabins. Any camper who brings snack food may access it during canteen time. If your camper has a food allergy or intolerance, our kitchen makes every effort to accomodate, with much success. If you are still concerned about the food allergy or intolerance, please let the executive director know and you can arrange to bring food for meals from home.
- Can my camper be put in a cabin with their friend?
Cabin assignments are made randomly for many reasons, but especially to encourage campers to make new friends and get outside their comfort zone. Campers will be able to see their friends during meals, rec time, and evening programs. We do not accept cabin requests.
- If my child is homesick, will they be able to contact me?
Campers are not allowed to use the phone system. It is our experience that homesick campers become even more homesick after talking to family, even if the family encourages them to stay and have fun. If we do run into any issues, we will contact you.
- How can I contact Halberg Ecology Camp?
You can contact our executive director, Tamzen Bryant, throughout the year via her email address, email@example.com. During camp our number is 501-991-3830.
- How does my child get invited back for senior camp?
Over the years, camp counselors and the camp committee have developed a wide-ranging set of criteria that we look for in each student, including behavior and level of interest. Using this criteria, counselors grade the students, and based on this, campers are invited back. Often, some campers are unable to attend, and the next camper on the list will be invited. Though we wish we could allow every interested camper to come back, we currently only have so much space and money.
- If my child is not invited back, can they attend as a junior camper again?
Unfortunately we cannot allow campers to attend as junior campers multiple years. Allowing this in the past has resulted in issues among campers.
